KANDIRA CLOTH
Kandıra Cloth is woven in Kandıra district of Kocaeli province. It is estimated that Kandıra Cloth weaving started in the Roman period in history. Due to its durableness, it was also called “çalı yırtmaz” (untorn by bush), “çalı koparan” (unbroken by bush) and was used as sailcloth. While Kandıra Cloth, which had been woven intensively in the villages of Kandıra until about thirty years ago, was woven on only a few looms two years ago, today it is tried to be revived by means of the courses offered by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality.
Kandıra Cloth is a local weave woven in plain weave weft on specially designed weaving looms. Its warp and weft are linen, and it is woven approximately 45 cm in width. It is also called as “Village Çezme” within the region. In Kandıra Cloth, natural white linen yarn is used by bleaching with ash water. In addition to the ones that are woven without a pattern, there are also examples woven with stripes. Shirts, dresses, salwar, towel and large handkerchiefs are made from Kandıra Cloth.
