Bolu Göynük Tokalı Örtme (Göynük Buckled Cover) is woven in the Göynük district of Bolu province to be used as a headscarf. Örtmes are among the ethnographic movable cultural assets of Göynük which has a deep-rooted Ottoman urban culture. There is no clear information in the sources about the history of the use of the Göynük Tokalı Örtme as a headscarf while it is tried to be kept alive with different projects today. However, the history of this weave in the region is quite old.
It is a headscarf consisting of two parts, with a pattern on the short edges and the part on the top of the head, and with red tassels called “buckles” on the short edges. It is woven with twisted cotton warp and weft threads in plain weave generally with a width of 90-100 cm and a length of 170-200 cm. The warp and ground weft of the fabric are cotton, and the patterned parts are cotton or silk. In the Bolu Göynük Tokalı Örtme woven in plain weave, natural white cotton, red, blue, orange, green, black, and dark blue colors are used.
It is basically divided into two groups as “head decorations” and “ground and forehead decorations”. Head decorations are applied as edging to the short edges. Additional weft strips are woven with black or navy blue thread on both sides of the edgings. The ground and forehead decorations are made above the short edgings and along the long edges. In some examples, small motifs were used as filler motifs in the middle. The ground and forehead decorations on the long edges are in different colors, with one side colored and the other plain.
